About This Calculator

This calculator combines a sustainable withdrawal from your retirement portfolio (using a withdrawal rate you choose, commonly 4%) with Social Security and any other income sources like a pension, to estimate your total monthly retirement income.

How This Is Calculated

Total Income = (Portfolio × Withdrawal Rate ÷ 12) + Monthly Social Security + Other Income

A $900,000 portfolio at a 4% withdrawal rate provides $3,000/month, plus $2,200 Social Security, for $5,200/month total.

Assumptions

  • Portfolio withdrawal is a simplified percentage-of-balance calculation, not a dynamic strategy that adjusts for market performance.
  • Does not account for taxes on withdrawals or Social Security, which vary by your total income and state.
  • Assumes Social Security and other income amounts stay constant, though Social Security typically receives annual cost-of-living adjustments.
