About This Calculator

Once you reach the IRS's required age, you must withdraw a minimum amount each year from traditional (pre-tax) retirement accounts like Traditional IRAs and 401(k)s. This calculator estimates your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) using the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table, based on your age and the account balance as of December 31 of the prior year.

How This Is Calculated

RMD = Prior Year-End Account Balance ÷ IRS Distribution Period (by age)

A $500,000 balance at age 74 (distribution period 25.5) requires an RMD of about $19,608 this year.

Assumptions

  • Uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (Table III) from Publication 590-B, which covers most account owners.
  • RMD start age under SECURE 2.0: 73 for those born 1951-1959; 75 for those born 1960 or later.
  • Interpolates for ages not directly listed in the simplified table used here — verify your exact distribution period in IRS Publication 590-B.
  • Roth 401(k) and Roth IRA accounts are generally exempt from RMDs for the original owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IRS can assess a penalty of up to 25% of the amount that should have been withdrawn (reduced to 10% if corrected within two years) — it's one of the more significant retirement account penalties, so RMDs shouldn't be missed.
