About This Calculator

This calculator computes the return on investment (ROI) for a business initiative — a new piece of equipment, a marketing campaign, a hire, or any investment — based on the total cost and the financial gain it produced, with an optional annualized return if you provide a timeframe.

How This Is Calculated

ROI % = (Total Gain − Investment Cost) ÷ Investment Cost × 100

A $25,000 investment generating $40,000 in value has a 60% ROI, or about 60% annualized if achieved within a year.

Assumptions

  • Does not account for the time value of money beyond simple annualization, or ongoing costs beyond the initial investment.
  • Assumes the 'total gain' figure represents value clearly attributable to this specific investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Attribute the revenue or cost savings that can reasonably be traced to the specific investment — for a marketing campaign, this is often the revenue generated by leads or customers from that campaign specifically, which can require careful tracking to isolate accurately.
